As you may know, receiving a good education increases your chance of getting a good job. Attending college is the next step after completing high school. Many of these schools offer programs that prepares students interested in obtaining professions. Because colleges are selective, it's important that you have a strong application. Read on for things you can put on your application to enhance it.
1. Take AP classes
What better way to brace yourself for college than to take college-level courses? Because of the intensity of these classes, there will be more work and the quizzes and tests will be more challenging. At the end of the year, you will have to take an exam for each AP class. If you successfully pass the exam for a class, you won't have to take the class in college. It's recommended that students take 2 or 3 AP classes in both their junior and senior year. If you can take AP classes in your freshmen year and sophomore year, do it! To make this experience meaningful, I suggest taking AP classes that you enjoy and will benefit you.
2. Take tests seriously
In addition to looking at grades, colleges look at standardized test scores (ACT or SAT). To apply for some colleges, you have to earn a certain test score. This is why it's important to take practice standardized tests when possible. While practice won't make perfect, it will improve test scores. Developing test skills, such as pacing yourself, will also boost your test score. The official ACT website and SAT website both have free sample tests, on which you use to prepare for the real thing.
3. Devote time outside of school
It seems that completing homework and studying for quizzes and tests leaves us no time to have fun. Why not make time to relax then? Being well-rounded is just as important as being strong academically. If you have a particular interest or talent in a sport, you can join your school's club or a sports team. If you prefer doing something outside of school, you can do volunteer work. Exceeding the required serving learning requirements will make you appear dedicated as a person, not just as a student.
4. Get to know your counselor
You may know that it's important to establish a good relationship with your teachers. This is to ensure colleges that you are a promising student. Did you know that you should do the same for your counselor? Furthermore, they can provide their insights to help you develop a bright future. While its their job to help you prepare for college, you have to work with them so that you can have a plan after high school. Together, the two of you can determine what classes to take, what colleges to apply for, even what careers to consider.
5. Research about colleges
It's helpful if you know what career you want or what you want to major in. Based on this information, you can narrow down your selection of schools. If you are considering obtaining a career, I suggest that you look for colleges that have preparatory programs for it. Also, you may want to attend the school's summer program or enrichment program to see if you like the school. Other important factors to consider in your research are the courses offered, the type of learning environment, location, and cost.
It's never too early to think about which college you want to go to. Preparing for college now means you will have less work later. Filling out applications and writing essays can be overwhelming, which is why they should be done when it's time to apply for college. Do you have any other tips on how to prepare for college?
