8 Tips for a Successful School Year

https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/

Having completed school up to the third year of high school, I can tell you that school gets more difficult and more overwhelming as each year pass. 7th grade and freshmen year were the years I was most concerned with. Not surprisingly, sophomore year and junior year didn't get any easier. All the more, it's important to stay on task and give your all every single day. Below, I offer you tips on how to survive another school year succeed in school.

1. Eat breakfast
You know what they say: "Every great day starts off with a delicious, nutritious breakfast." I agree but what breakfast food can possibly taste good while being good for you? Well, to start with, it should have protein and fiber to keep you satisfied until lunch time. Try these simple breakfast ideas: (1) an apple with a bowl of oatmeal or (2) a banana with a bowl of cereal. The piece of fruit in each option will provide you fiber and satisfy your sweet tooth. The milk, oatmeal, and cereal all contain protein. The oatmeal and cereal can also count towards your daily serving of whole grains.

2. Get enough sleep
Sleep, the one thing you can't seem to get enough of because of school. Lack of it cause grumpiness, fatigue, and headaches, all of which deprive energy. To feel and do your best in school, make sure you get seven to eight hours of sleep a night.  That means don't stay up late if you don't have to - no late night snacks, movies or TV shows, or phone calls, nothing.

3. Make some friends
When I say make friends, I don't mean just anyone that come across as cordial. Some of these people attempt to gain your trust and then turn their back on you. You don't want to develop these kind of friendships because they will cause you to lose confidence and focus. Instead, develop bonds with people who are serious about education - these are usually the kind of people that have good values. They would also make great study buddies or project partners.

4. Come to class
Attendance is one thing many students take for granted. They either think school is unimportant or ditching is 'cool'. Whichever the reason, they don't realize that they're missing a lot of valuable learning time. Keep in mind that each day you miss, you fall behind. In addition, if you cut or have a certain number of unexcused absences, you'll be forced to repeat the grade level...dun, dun, dun.

5. Engage yourself
On the other hand, there's no point in coming to class if you're just going to take a nap or let others do all the talking. I admit that I'm not active in all of my classes but I strive to answer a question every so often. Talking in class can seem daunting to shy people like me, but participating have its rewards. First of all, you're allowed to share your thoughts and they're valued. Secondly, this is good practice for the 'real' world, where communication is required every day. The same applies to P.E. - you will only get better if you practice the sport or physical activity.

6. Stay focused
Whether you're taking notes or shooting a basket, it's important to put your full concentration into it. Not only will the time seem worthwhile, you will get that accomplished feeling. Doing your work or studying in a quiet, well-lighted and will help you achieve that feeling. If it helps, play some music in the background to energize yourself (or keep yourself awake!). I usually listen to alternative rock music when I'm feeling sleepy.

7. Work hard
Doing the work is another aspect of school that students take for granted. Teachers assign classwork, homework, and projects for a reason - to practice what you've learned in class. In my opinion, projects are meant to be the more fun way of reviewing. Teachers quiz and test you to see if you understand what you've learned in class. When there are quizzes and tests, I suggest you study over all notes and assignments you have to feel confident.

8. Take breaks
I know, I know, school's boring, it's tedious, and yeah, it's a pain in the butt. That's why I take short take breaks when I'm working on something for school, especially annotating and writing papers. During my breaks, I like to read blogs. It also helps to drink a cup of cold water to freshen up and keep the blood flowing.

So, there you have it, eight tips on how to be successful in school. Some of these tips may seem hard to follow, but do your best to incorporate them into each school day. By the time high school, college, or higher level of education come around, you'll be an outstanding student. School will also be less stressful for you. Good luck to you and your education.
